What is a neurotologist?

Neurotologists are otolaryngologists- head and neck surgeons that have undergone additional training and are experts in complex surgeries of the ear and temporal bone. Some of the most common procedures that we perform include the restoration of hearing with cochlear implants both in adults and children, ossicular chain reconstruction and tympanoplasty. Dr. Cristobal also routinely performs surgeries for chronic ear infections, difficult perforations of the eardrum and for newly diagnosed or recurrent cholesteatoma using microscopic and endoscopic techniques in order to minimize recovery time and to maximize the chances of success.

As a neurotologist, Dr. Cristobal treats surgically complex tumors deep to the ear (along the lateral skull base), while focusing on preserving the anatomical integrity and function of vital adjacent nerves that provide sensation to the face and throat, movement to the vocal cords, tongue, eye, and shoulder, and of the blood vessels in the area. Dr. Cristobal is also trained on the treatment of these tumors with “focused” stereotactic three dimensional radiation (Gamma Knife and Cyberknife). The most common tumors treated in his practice include acoustic neuroma, a tumor of the nerve of balance that connects the ear to the brain, as well as “glomus” or paraganglioma tumors. Other unusual conditions treated include spinal fluid leaks into the ear and the repair of encephaloceles, a condition in which the brain sags into the ear through a defect in the bone.

We had 18 hours to decide on which cochlear implants to have implanted in our son, before total ossification made it impossible. He was direct, honest, and confident. He performed an already very complicated and delicate surgery on what was already difficult to correct. Once again, my son has hearing and it is becuse of the quick action that Dr. Cristobal took to allow this miracle to happen.

OK this has to be one of the greatest physicians. When I visited his office I had little hearing. We had to overcome problems that most don’t deal with. After completing the necessary work that had to be done I then received cochlear implants. My life has never been the same it is so nice to be back out in the hearing world again. I can’t recommend him enough— despite having to give hard news, Dr. Cristobal was empathetic, kind, honest, hopeful, and competent. Heard about Dr Christobal through a family member several years ago. During that time, my previous Doctors could not seem to narrow down or solve my ear problems. Decided to ask for an appt with Dr.Christobal. His staff is awesome and so is he. I am retired, but spent 45 years in administrative support of health care professionals in four health science centers from Houston, TX to Washington, DC and back to Fort Worth, TX. There are very few physicians as thorough as Dr. Cristobal. I had COVID-19 in 2021 and spent 23 days in the hospital. I still have symptoms of Long COVID. Dr. Cristobal, on my first visit, immediately performed a thorough examination and scheduled several tests that he feels will help him diagnose and treat these lingering symptoms of dizziness, equilibrium and imbalance. He is a kind man, friendly and approaches a patient with a high degree of professionalism. He shows his caring attitude throughout the entire process of the examination. I recommend he and his staff very highly.
